Committed to Him

How did you spend your Monday nights in December 2010? If you were like many Americans, you tuned in to NBC’s vocal competition, The Sing–Off, hosted by Nick Lachey. The show, produced by Sony Pictures Television, features vocal groups who must rely only on their accapella capabilities.
The 2010 season premiere garnered 8.5 million viewers, many who were also on Facebook giving a blow-by-blow commentary. In this season, viewers were introduced to Committed, a six member male group hailing from Huntsville, Alabama, who first got started in 2003 at Forest Lake Academy in Apopka, Florida. The group’s personality and vocal charm made an impression on the television audience and the show’s judges, who dubbed them “church boys.”
In the end they were crowned the winners—receiving $100,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music.
MESSAGE: What was the process the group had to go through to enter the competition?”
Committed: Cedric Dent, from Take 6, told us that we should be on the show. He heard us at an event where we performed Take 6 songs. After he told us about it, we looked at season one of the show online. We then recorded videos to show our vocal skills and personalities. After the producers of the show received the recordings, they contacted us and asked us to be one of the groups on the show.
MESSAGE: How has the competition brought you all closer together?
Committed: Having to live in close quarters during the competition (two in each room) spending entire days together, we had some disagreements, but we got over the issues and grew closer. That helped with the chemistry of the group. We’re more like brothers than just some guys that are singing together.
MESSAGE: How did you feel having to sing secular music for the first time?
Committed: We didn’t know at first how we were going to approach this style of music. We also didn’t know how it would come across to the audience that was viewing the competition . God used this opportunity to have us be a light that shown in the competition. He makes ways that we don’t understand. When we were singing during the competition, people were impressed, and they saw God in us. He truly does all things well.
MESSAGE: How does it feel to have won this competition?
Committed: When they announced that we had won, we didn’t believe it. We believe that if God didn’t want us to win, we wouldn’t have won.
MESSAGE: What type of music are you performing?
Committed: Sony al lowed us to record an inspirational album. This was a first for Sony. Throughout the competition we made it known that we would not work on God’s Sabbath/Saturday. Initially they were giving us problems, but we stood our ground. God had a plan. People on the set began asking us about our religious affiliation, and about God. We really didn’t think that because of our decision, people would be asking us about God.
MESSAGE: Who are some of your mentors—spiritually and musically?
Committed: All of our parents have served as our spiritual mentors. They continue to pray for us during this whole experience. James R.Doggette, Sr., of the Madison Mission Seventh-day Adventist Church in Huntsville, Alabama, and C. Wesley Knight, of the Decatur Seventh-day Adventist Church, have also served as spiritual mentors. Our musical mentors have been Wayne Bucknor (assistant professor of piano and music technology at Oakwood University), Take 6, Jason Ferdinand (director of the Oakwood University Aeolians), and Roberto Burton (musician).
MESSAGE: How do you plan to stay grounded while pursuing your dreams in the music industry?
Committed: We know that we are just regular guys, and our friends and family keep us grounded. But first and foremost our relationship with God will also keep us grounded. Many verses have been guiding us throughout this experience, but two in particular stand out. Jeremiah 29:11 states: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give
you hope and a future.”* Proverbs 3:5, 6 says: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” God has our back more than we will ever know!
